Son’s quick shot gave Tottenham the lead early on, after a sumptuous pass from French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
Despite constant pressure from Manchester City, including a disallowed goal from Aymeric Laporte, it was Tottenham who doubled their lead, with Lo Celso scoring moments after entering the field.
The victory puts Spurs ahead of London rivals Chelsea, who beat Newcastle on Saturday, at the top of the Premier League table.
“It’s a season where you have to do everything you can to win games. It’s going to be a year of ups and downs, you’ve seen that. Part of my job is working hard for the team, winning tackles, of course, scoring goals and getting assists, but I enjoy defending and working hard.
“The feeling now after the game, once you’ve made a big change, there is no better feeling when you win. We will enjoy it, but we know we have a long way to go.”
Doing battle
As they have done many times as coaches for Barcelona and Real Madrid, Saturday’s clash gave Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho the opportunity to resume hostilities.
In the last edition of their rivalry, it was Mourinho’s Tottenham who started the fastest.
And it was sizzling Son who opened the deadlock within the first 10 minutes, sliding his shot under Ederson after landing on a quickly launched free throw.
However, despite sitting down after scoring, it was Tottenham who initially looked like they could double their lead.
After some exquisite linking game between his attackers, Kane sent the ball home, only for the offside flag to be raised properly.
And after going back and dominating possession, Manchester City finally started creating chances.
With the ever-charming Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings, the Spurs defenders put up last-minute challenges and blocks to prevent the 2018-19 Premier League champions from leveling the scores.
At 29 minutes, Manchester City had the ball in the back of the net thanks to Laporte, only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to disallow the goal by a hand from Gabriel Jesus in preparation.
Despite creating all the meaningful starts and opportunities before halftime, Manchester City could not find a draw.
After the break, it was more of the same, with De Bruyne trying his luck from a distance to no avail.
However, against the running of the game and just 35 seconds after coming in as a substitute, Lo Celso doubled the Spurs’ lead, rushing to a pass from Kane to push him under Ederson.
Manchester City huffed and puffed for the final 25 minutes but couldn’t find breakthrough. The result means that it remains firmly rooted in the Premier League middle table.
“We had our chances, but we couldn’t score and they made two or three chances on the fast break and we lost the game.
“We knew before the game that you can’t give them the first goal. We had more chances and they but we lost. Mourinho’s teams are like that, you make mistakes and they punish you on the counter.
Both teams will be in European action during the week as Tottenham take on Ludogorets Razgrad on Thursday, while Manchester City travel to Greece to play Olympiakos on Wednesday.
