Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, has revealed the government’s plans to make Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) one of the premium refineries in the West African sub-region.
Dr. Prempeh indicated that the government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would offer support to TOR in the form of a strategic partnership with the aim of making the refinery operate at its full potential.
Dr. Prempeh testified during his first familiarization and interaction visit with refinery staff and management in Tema.
TOR, established in 1963, is the only refinery in Ghana, which refines crude oil into various petroleum products, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline (gasoline), kerosene, diesel (diesel), kerosene for turban fuel. aviation and premixes, among others.
Dr. Prempeh emphasized that TOR would not disintegrate or undergo divestment under the current government, as it remained a very important asset on the Ministry of Energy’s list.
He noted that to achieve their goals, TOR workers and management must work together in unity to change the fortunes of the refinery.
He assured the workers that the ministry will ensure that the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) regulations do not adversely affect the refinery, but rather help it achieve its stated goals and objectives.
Mr. Francis AT Boateng, TOR Managing Director, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for choosing the refinery as the first institution to visit after assuming the position of Sector Minister.
He described it as an honor and a privilege, as it emphasized the Minister’s commitment to help bring TOR back to life, a promise he made during his background investigation.
Boateng said the completion and commissioning of the refinery’s second furnace that blew up in January 2017 would return TOR to its original capacity of 45,000 barrels per day of flow, doubling its revenue-generating potential.
He thanked the Minister for the immeasurable role he played as Minister Designate in ensuring that funds were made available to TOR for the purpose of completing and commissioning the furnace to replace the exploited one.
