The Electoral Commission (EC) has said that it expects a voter turnout of close to 100 percent in today’s special voting exercise.
“We expect a participation close to 100 percent and we are confident that the result will be peaceful, credible, transparent and orderly, with God being our helper,” EC President Jean Mensa told the media yesterday in Accra. .
Addressing the latest edition of the ‘Let the Citizens Know’ series, Ms Mensa also released the final voter registration for the 2020 general election, in which 17,027,641 people have been certified to participate in the polls. .
All ready
Stating that everything was ready for today’s special vote, the EC president said that election officials had been recruited and trained, all materials had been distributed in sufficient quantities, and biometric verification devices had been prepared and deployed. (BVD).
“In total, 109,557 people, made up of security personnel, the media and EC personnel, requested to participate in the exercise in the 275 constituencies. It is instructive to note that this is the highest number the commission has recorded for special voting in its history, ”he said.
Significantly, he said, this year, the EC provided the special voting list to the representatives of the institutions whose staff requested to vote in the exercise.
However, it was unfortunate that some of the requests received for special voting could not be considered as a result of their late arrival and the freezing of data after processing, he said.
Ms Mensa urged the public to ignore information on social media that the EC had prevented law enforcement agencies from registering.
“All the officers who submitted the application on time and provided the correct identification card number were duly registered. Unfortunately, we prefer to have a problem with our media partners who have been collaborating with us all this time. There were some discrepancies from the list submitted by the GJA. The electronic copy of the list was different from the hard copy, which contained more applicants. Unfortunately, that was not made known to the EC team.
“As such, only the names in the electronic copy are reflected in the special voting list. The commission regrets this and wishes to assure the GJA, NMC and journalists in general of our support for their efforts. To mitigate this, the EC has instructed its field officials to give preferential treatment to media personnel who hold the commission’s accreditation cards, ”said the president.
Voter registration
Giving a breakdown of the names in the final voter register, Ms Mensa said that 8,810,283 people, representing 51.74 percent, were women, while 8,217,358, representing 48.26 percent. , they were men.
He indicated that the Greater Accra region had the highest number of voters: 3.53 million, followed by the Ashanti region, which has about 3.012 million voters.
On the other hand, the Northeast and Savannah regions hosted the lowest and second lowest number of voters, made up of 289,529 and 298,404, respectively.
He said the EC had certified about 542 voters to vote by manual verification.
Missing names
Beyond the more than 17 million names on the voter registry, he said, 830 names were found to be missing, but they would now be allowed to vote after their names were discovered through a thorough examination.
She said affected voters were at 38,622 polling stations across the country.
Ms Mensa said the list would be posted on the commission’s website so that the public can access it.
Record posting
The president of the EC said that the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127 ordered the commission to publish the certified copy of the final voter registry in the manner determined by the commission.
As a result, he said, he had chosen to make the register available in two electronic formats to allow registered voters to “seamlessly verify their data before the election.”
He stressed that the final record had been uploaded to the commission’s website for the general public to verify their names.
Ms. Mensa indicated that voters could also use USSD * 711 * 2020 # to verify their details on the electoral roll before the polls, explaining that use was free.
“Publishing the final voter record in these two electronic formats will allow voters to know the details of their polling place so they can go through a smooth voting process on Election Day. We kindly ask people who have problems with their registration to contact the nearest EC district offices across the country for an immediate solution, ”he said.
The EC president said the final record showed that around 7,890 people had engaged in multiple searches, for a total of 15,860.
