Timo Werner warned that his “selfish” actions are proving detrimental to Chelsea

Timo Werner has been urged to be less ‘selfish’ and ‘settle in’ to get his Chelsea career back on track.

The £ 53m summer signing has gone his last 10 games scoreless, and his latest performance at Arsenal has been particularly disappointing.

Frank Lampard took the German out at halftime during the Emirates clash and criticized his forward for “not giving us enough.”

Werner now looks set to be benched for Chelsea’s clash against Aston Villa on Monday, and former England striker Peter Crouch has offered him some advice.

“I thought Chelsea had hit a masterstroke when they signed Werner,” Crouch told the Mail. “But I’ve watched him closely a couple of times over Christmas and I’ve caught something that tells you he’s played 949 minutes with his club since his last goal.

Timo Werner is suffering from an ongoing goal drought that currently extends to 10 matches

“He’s shooting when it should happen. Forwards should be selfish, but not when it’s to the detriment of the team.”

“Werner is anxious and wants to break this sequence, but there was a moment against West Ham where he hit a shot and his teammates reacted with frustration, as he had not done the simple.

“He’ll be fine eventually, he just needs to calm down.”

The forward’s sterile streak follows a seven-goal streak in seven straight games in all competitions, but Werner’s lack of confidence will be a concern for his club given his status as one of the most prolific shooters in Europe.

However, Werner was not the only player to leave boss Lampard indifferent, as Mateo Kovacic was also replaced at halftime, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jorginho in the duo.

They have given them one of the most powerful attacks in the Premier League, but behind them is a defense that continues to filter goals, with draws 3-3 against West Brom and Southampton already behind them.

Both substitutes gave Chelsea an extra boost, with Hudson-Odoi setting up Tammy Abraham’s goal, though Jorginho later saw his late penalty saved.

Chelsea are now on a losing streak of three of their last four, and Lampard admitted that his current situation would prove to be a true test of his team’s determination.

“I don’t think this season is going to be easy, winning every week,” he said. “We felt confident and we got to a position where we weren’t losing games and winning a lot of games.

“When you lose a couple of games, things get a lot more difficult and the only way out of that is to fight and work hard.

Werner was sent off at half-time and is likely to start as a substitute in Chelsea’s next game.

“The few losses that we have had recently are due to our going down. Players have leveled off. My job is to get it back. “

Commenting on Werner’s contribution, he added: “Certainly goals that don’t come in are always something an attacking player will be judged by.

“[Against Arsenal] Timo wasn’t giving us enough with or without the ball.

“Some of that we have to give him time. I keep saying the same thing because it’s a different league, but we also have to get there fast.”
