Marcus Thuram will miss Borussia Monchengladbach’s games against Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund during his suspension

Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram received a six-match ban and a 40,000 euro (£ 36,300) fine from the German football association for spitting at an opponent.

Thuram, 23, was sent off in his team’s 2-1 Bundesliga loss to Hoffenheim.

A video review showed that the French international, the son of 1998 World Cup champion Lilian Thuram, spat in defender Stefan Posch’s face.

Thuram has also been fined a month’s salary by his club.

German newspaper Bild reported that the fine could be around 150,000 euros (£ 136,200), a record penalty for the club. The money will go to charity work.

“Marcus has accepted this and has also offered to participate in this social cause on his own behalf,” said Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl.

“I’ve come to know him as a thoughtful person with great behavior.”

The score was 1-1 when Thuram was sent off in the 78th minute, and Hoffenheim scored a late goal to put Monchengladbach eighth in the German top flight.

Thuram, who has played three times for France, posted an apology on Instagramexternal-link after the match.

“That is not in my character and should never happen,” he said. “I reacted to an opponent incorrectly and something happened accidentally and unintentionally.

“I apologize to everyone. Of course, I accept all the consequences of my gesture.”
