Three people have been arrested in connection with an alleged attack on Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, an elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Keta constituency, and his home.

Their names are withheld for security reasons.

About 10 armed and masked men reportedly attacked the newly elected MP, his parents, a younger brother and his house helper at their home in Anlo-Afiadenyigba, Keta Township.

The attackers carried out their operation in the early morning of December 11, 2020, injuring the victims while taking their money.

The action of the invaders caused the residents to concentrate and demand the transfer of all the police officers from the Anlo-Afiadenyigba Police Post.

They alleged that during the attack, the elected deputy managed to run to the police station with great hopes of receiving help, but did not meet any police at the post.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Chief Superintendent Leonard Abakah, Commander of the Keta Divisional Police, said that police investigations led to the arrest of two suspects, hours after the attack and later, a third suspect was arrested.

He urged residents to trust the police to bring the perpetrators to the reserve and asked the public to provide timely and useful information to aid police investigations.

“We are conducting serious investigations into this crime. We currently have three people helping with the investigations, ”he said.

“Two of them were arrested around Anlo-Afiadenyigba and the third person was arrested in Afife in Ketu North municipality,” he added.

“We intend not to reveal their identities now for the sake of the ongoing investigations.”
Chief Superintendent Abakah said the Divisional Command had taken steps to address the concerns of area residents to ensure calm.

“The Abor District Commander has been tasked with taking disciplinary action against the officers who were supposed to be on duty at the time of the attack.

Meanwhile, the Divisional Command, in consultation with the Regional Command, had caused the transfer of all personnel from the Anlo-Afiadenyigba Police Post.

The command has placed dedicated and committed officers there to help fight crime in the area.
