Thousands of admirers, fans and loved ones of former President Jerry John Rawlings held a candlelight vigil hosted by the National Democratic Party (NDC) on Friday night in Ho
Notable figures in the Volta Region, which include; NDC leaders took turns recounting fond memories of the Party founder in a solemn ceremony that directed the heavy traffic to Jubilee Park.
The traditional music of various districts of the Region maintained a memory mood sustained by images of the former president playing on a giant screen.
Togbe Kasa III, Asogli state main division chief, said the late president would be remembered forever for ending the region’s political neglect.
“Many previous leaders failed Volta. Common water was scarce. The bosses had to mobilize and go meet with Rawlings, ”he said, also mentioning the role of the late president in ensuring that the Region received its fair share of national electricity production.
The late president was also praised for advancing the provision of a regional hospital. Togbe Kasa described the late President Rawlings as “very respectful of bosses” and said, “If you are president and you’ve done all this and you would die and Ho bosses don’t say so, then we’re ungrateful.
Alhaji Magid, the leader of the Muslim community in the region, praised Rawlings for instituting national festivals for the Islamic faith, as well as facilitating his religious pilgrimages and establishing educational institutions.
“He has empowered us as Muslims and today we have Islamic schools. He has left us a legacy and we must never forget it. We were orphans, but JJ fathered us all. He did not leave orphans, ”he said.
Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament for the Ho West constituency, said: “Rawlings remembered Volta, therefore Voltarians must remember him.
“Rawlings defended democracy. He made it possible for us to be Ghanaians. “
Captain (Rtd) George Nfodjoh, who had marched with the former president during the days of his revolution, said that Rawlings was a man who “did everything he could to help a lot of ordinary people”, and that he will not be buried but will be it will turn into a seed that will be “sown for the benefit of the nation.”
Mr. Henry Ametefee, Volta regional chairman of the NDC, and also a cadre of the revolution, said the former president should not limit himself to memory, but become “a light ahead of us.”
He appealed to Party members to come together to ensure victory in the next elections, to provide a proper celebration in memory of its late founder.
“I have known him for 41 years and I cannot count how much he sacrificed his life for this great nation. “JJ can only be remembered by the Party he founded and not by any Party in the country,” Ametefee said.
James Gunu, Party secretary in the region, said that Rawlings was a “hero, an architect of the Fourth Republic, a king, a grassroots person and a legend,” while Kafui Agbleze, a regional communications officer, said his roots must never die. , and asked that his works be made known to all. Party women in the Region also noted that Rawlings was passionate about the well-being of women and fought to secure their freedom.
