Stakeholders in the 2020 elections in the Tano Sur constituency signed a peace agreement to promote peaceful elections on December 7 and beyond after police identified the constituency as a political ‘hot spot’ in the region of Ahafo.
The roadmap was designed by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Bechem Local Council of Churches.
Those who signed the pact included traditional authorities, religious leaders, youth groups, and representatives from the NDC and NPP and the media.
However, the NDC has yet to sign the peace pact, which impressed each other to help preserve the prevailing peace in the area.
At a meeting in Bechem on Thursday, Nana Kwabena Aborampah-Mensah, team leader, Security Sector Governance, CDD-Ghana, added that virtually all local communities had also signed the peace agreement.
The meeting was organized by CDD-Ghana in collaboration with NCCE and the Local Council of Churches to sensitize stakeholders, including chiefs, queens and representatives of the NDC and NPP, the media and youth groups on the peace agreement.
Aborampah-Mensah explained that each of the stakeholders remained a key player in ensuring peaceful elections and asked them to adopt and work to ensure that all parties follow the provisions of the agreement to strengthen the peace prevailing in the area.
He recalled that most of the local communities in the constituency had signed a pact and called on stakeholders to ensure that, in particular, political parties and their supporters, as well as the electorate in the area, follow the roadmap for a peaceful general election.
The agreements in the road map, Nana Aborampah-Mensah mentioned, included a ban on the use of unregistered motorcycles around polling stations and the accreditation of vehicles that would provide food to party electoral agents.
All parliamentary candidates cannot visit polling stations with more than three supporters, and supporters of political parties cannot carry any weapon or offensive instrument in the various polling stations.
Ms. Enyo Akua Fiawotso, NCCE’s Tano South Municipal Director, emphasized that the 1992 Constitution gave all eligible voters the right to affiliate with a particular political party of their choice.
He called on the NDC to sign the agreement and for everyone collectively to help ensure peaceful elections.
Nana Awuah Boadi, the traditional Nifahene area of Bechem, praised CDD-Ghana and its partners for designing the pact, saying it would go a long way towards facilitating peace before, during and after the December 7 elections.
