Getting caught hours after a 4-0 win was probably not on Thomas Tuchel’s Christmas list.
Paris Saint-Germain finally confirmed on Tuesday that the German had been removed from his managerial position, news that was already widely known.
Tuchel led PSG to back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and their first Champions League final in August, where they were narrowly beaten by Bayern Munich.
This season has been more difficult nationally. PSG have already lost four league games, one more than last season, and are currently one point behind Lyon and Lille.
However, Tuchel still guided the club to the knockout stages of the Champions League and led a difficult group that included RB Leipzig and Manchester United.
The 47-year-old is eager to get back to work as soon as possible after agreeing to a £ 5.4 million payment with the French club and is said to have his eye on management in England. Should a Premier League vacancy arise, Tuchel’s name would likely be at the top of most lists. Sportsmail looks at your possible options and which club might be a better fit.
Arsenal
Mikel Arteta was a man under pressure before Arsenal’s win over Chelsea on Boxing Day.
While that result may have lifted some of the sadness looming over the Emirates, the Spaniard knows he will face more doubts about his future if he cannot lift the club up the table.
It’s been the youngsters who have shone for the Gunners this season. Bukayo Saka was the star against Chelsea and players like Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Emile Smith Rowe have impressed in the Europa League.
The form of senior players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian has been Arteta’s concern. Tuchel worked with Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund and the forward described the German as one of the best coaches he has ever had.
Tuchel’s creative style of football focuses on high levels of possession and has been compared to that of Pep Guardiola and Arsene Wenger, making him the jobless coach to replace Arteta.
Arsenal are 15th in the table, but are only nine points behind Tottenham, who are currently seventh. However, they are also only six points from the relegation zone.
With Tuchel waiting behind the scenes, it’s a turning point in the season for Arteta.
HOW LIKELY IS IT? 7/10 – Probably the best fit for Tuchel of all the Premier League clubs.
Chelsea
The Christmas period is becoming a recurring problem for Frank Lampard’s teams.
During their Derby season, the Rams won one game out of five during the holiday schedule. The following campaign saw his Chelsea team win two out of five and it is currently one win out of five for the Blues this season.
It is far from being a crisis and there have been obvious signs of progress since last season. However, Lampard needs to improve results quickly before his team lags further behind its six main rivals.
After spending £ 253 million on summer transfers, the manager knows that a place in the top four is the minimum achievement expected of him.
The Chelsea manager has a good relationship with Roman Abramovich but the Russian is not sentimental and if the results do not improve Lampard could be in trouble.
Could Abramovich be tempted by Tuchel? It was in 2017 when the German left Dortmund but a move did not materialize.
German newspaper Bild reported that Tuchel would love the opportunity to work with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who have had trouble getting started since their summer moves. Lampard will likely be given time, but next month is a critical period for the Chelsea manager.
HOW LIKELY IS IT? 10/6 – Chelsea are not likely to panic unless they really slide.
United manchester
It hasn’t been easy for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, but his job seems secure with Manchester United, one of the teams in the form of the Premier League. And with Mauricio Pochettino on his way to PSG, the main candidate to take his post seems to be out of the market.
While the Champions League slump in the group stage was a disappointment, United responded well. The club is fourth in the league and will be two points behind leader Liverpool if they win their matches in hand.
If the club had doubts about Solskjaer they could have fired him after the 6-1 loss to Tottenham, the 1-0 loss to Arsenal or the European exit in Leipzig.
After every bad performance, Solskjaer’s players responded and there is obvious endorsement for him in the locker room.
Tuchel reportedly felt unfairly targeted by the French media during his time at PSG. That criticism is likely to pale in comparison to the scrutiny that comes with being the Red Devils manager.
HOW LIKELY IS IT? 10/5 – United would have to have a very bad run of results to consider a change on the bench.
