Thomas Partey’s position ‘could shape Arsenal’s future transfer business’

Former Arsenal forward Kevin Campbell believes that the way Mikel Arteta uses Thomas Partey will decide which player they will target in the next transfer window.

The Ghanaian midfielder joined the club in a £ 52 million move from Atlético de Madrid on the day of the deadline, and has impressed so far.

However, it is not yet clear if he will be used regularly as a defensive midfielder or if he will play later as a playmaker.

The Gunners have been linked to a move by Lyon’s attacking midfielder Houssem Aouar or Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi, more defensive, in January.

And speaking to Highbury Squad on YouTube, Campbell suggested that Arsenal’s next target player will completely depend on where Partey is played.

It is not yet clear whether Thomas Partey will be used as a defensive midfielder or from area to area.

“You could say, okay, if Thomas Partey is going to go a little further, go out there and make Ndidi sit there,” Campbell said.

“No problem, but it depends, you can get an Aouar that goes further or get a Ndidi type so that Partey can do box by box.”

Previously, former Arsenal defender Lauren expressed his belief that Partey offers more in advance than sitting in front of defense, suggesting that the Gunners are more likely to go with Ndidi than Aouar.

“Before, they used him as a midfielder,” Lauren told Goal.

Arsenal have been linked with Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester

“Now he can pass the ball, play with the striker, take shots from outside the area and even score important goals, as we saw last year in the Champions League.

“I think it will be a fantastic addition in the middle of the park.”

Partey will next be in action for the Gunners as they look to put their disappointing 3-0 loss to Aston Villa behind them when they take on Leeds United on Sunday.
