The summer transfer window was filled with conversations about who Mikel Arteta would hire to bolster his midfield.
They were the areas the Spaniard was most keen to strengthen, even after completing another loan from Dani Ceballos all season.
Thomas Partey was the strong link at the beginning of the window, but as the weeks passed another name emerged: Houssem Aouar.
Aouar is a different player than Partey, with his focus more on the offensive side of the game, with Partey seen as a more defensive midfielder.
Which way would Arteta look to go?

With Aouar not feasible, Arsenal once again replaced Partey on the deadline and secured his services by paying the 45 million pound release clause that Atlético de Madrid had established.
That seemed to be the sticking point across the window, but the Gunners ultimately decided to spend money and secure the Ghanaian’s services.
So it would appear that Arteta has opted for a more defensive midfielder in his strengthening process, but that may not necessarily be the case.
Partey’s international teammate Andy Yiadom believes that Arsenal have the best of both worlds with Partey.
Speaking to Goal.com, he said: “When I’ve seen Atlético, he seems to sit there and do the hard work, but when he’s out with us, he has a lot more to his game than that.

“I think his record in terms of goals for Ghana (10 goals in 27 games) shows it because every time it seems like I’m going with Ghana, he scores, so he also has that attacking threat.
“He’s athletic, he’s really good on the ball, he’s slick and has great set pieces. The way he keeps the ball in tight positions when you think he might lose it is really impressive. It just stands out, it’s hard to describe as a certain type of player because I don’t think I can.
“Atlético, obviously, is very rigid and extremely disciplined, but after having trained with him, I don’t see him as a player who only pursues and protects the defense, he has much more quality for him than that.”
