Thiago Silva explained that he sent a message to his Chelsea teammates in the dressing room on Wednesday night before their victory over Rennes in the Champions group stage.
In the end, it was a comfortable European match for the Blues, as French rival Rennes played the entire second half with one man less after Dalbert was sent off in the first period for conceding two penalties.
Timo Werner was present to convert twice from the penalty spot, while Tammy Abraham also scored with her half volley to make it 3-0 for three points.
However, Silva has revealed that he warned his Blues teammates not to underestimate Rennes before the match as he has had a lot of experience playing against them since his time in Ligue 1 with former club Paris Saint-Germain.
“Rennes is a good team, I told my teammates in the locker room before the game,” Silva was quoted as saying by the club’s official website.
“I have played a lot against this team. Two seasons ago they beat Paris in the final of the Coupe de France, I was injured but I saw a team that played very well with the ball. They are very well organized and have a coach who likes technical football ”.
Chelsea have been crying out for a vocal leader on and off the pitch for some time now, which is why it is so refreshing to hear Silva become such a great figure in the locker room and there are plenty of Francophones within the team to translate his message.
He is a seasoned series winner that younger players can lean on and the impact he has had on the team’s defense has been excellent as his confidence rubs off on others.
Many questioned the decision to sign the 36-year-old at the start of the season, but he is not playing like someone at the end of his career and has been key to good form.
