Thiago Mendes and his family have been the target of death threats on social media after their entry left Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar with an ankle injury.
Despite confirmation that Neymar has not broken any bones and the injury is not as serious as initially feared, his compatriot Mendes has received scathing insults from PSG fans and the Brazilian international online.
Kelly, Mendes’ wife, spoke to CNEWS this week and recited some of the abuse she and her partner have received. One said: ‘Because of your boyfriend’s actions, if something happens to Neymar, you will pay for it with your life. You and your family, one by one.
In the wake of the entry, which saw a VAR review resulting in a red card for Mendes, Neymar went straight to the scanners and has since been confirmed to have suffered a sprain and could return after the Ligue 1 winter break.
Meanwhile, Mendes has been left in fear for his family’s safety after the game, and his partner confirmed that they called the police to help with the threats.
Neymar’s father’s comments have done little to quell the outrage, after he posted on social media after the entry.
Writing on Instagram, he said, ‘Fuck … how much longer? We have talked a lot about this, we have stressed so much the excess of violence.
‘We are not taking the necessary measures throughout the game, during which Neymar was the victim of a dozen fouls, always violent.
“This encourages these types of players and attitudes.”
Neymar, for his part, took to Instagram himself earlier in the week to reassure his followers that ‘it could have been worse’, and it is expected that he will not miss many PSG games, if any.
His coach, Thomas Tuchel, even hinted that he might be ready to face Lille at the weekend in PSG’s penultimate match before the break.
