Legal practitioner Samson Lardy Anyenini has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for not allowing people without nose masks to vote in today’s special voting exercise.

He has described the incident as constitutionally incorrect, as there is no law prohibiting qualified Ghanaian voters without masks from exercising their right to vote.

“It is not our views or opinions about who can vote and what can happen to them if they try to vote, but what the Constitution is bound to do, which guides us all, including the Electoral Commission.

The constitutional provision in article 42 is that once you are a Ghanaian aged 18 or over, and in your right mind, you have the right to vote and to be registered as a voter for the purposes of voting, ”he said. Joy news.

Voters, including 3 security officials, are reportedly turned away by security personnel for failing to comply with Covid-19 protocols

But Mr. Anyenini maintains that anyone whose name has been registered on the Special Voters List before today, in accordance with the 2020 Public Election Regulations, CI 124, except unlike another law, has the right to cast a vote. .

“The law that regulates how we are going to vote, which is CI 127, says in Regulation 29 that you must appear at the voting table at 7:00 am or at any time between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm , after which you will not be allowed to vote.

“What it means, therefore, is that while you have the constitutional right to vote, and have been registered to vote, with your name on the voter registry, you still must comply with the subsidiary law on how to proceed to vote. ,” He noticed.

He urged the Election Commission and the state to provide nasal masks to people who arrive at polling stations without one, rather than denying them the right to vote.

The special voting exercise, which takes place at 311 designated voting centers located in the 275 electoral districts, is for persons with special assignments on Election Day.

According to the EC, a total of 109,577 voters from 12 institutions are expected to cast their votes today.
