The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have denied rumors circulating on social media that they intend to use embedded vigilantes to launch a ground offensive from the eastern border.
The military has also called false claims that it is conspiring to intimidate voters in the Volta and Oti regions, strongholds of the largest opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC).
A statement signed by Colonel E. Aggrey Quarshie, the army’s director of public relations, said the rumors were lies.

GHANA ARMED FORCES RESPOND TO FALSE INFORMATION IN CIRCULATION
The Ghanaian Armed Forces (GAF) consider it necessary to respond to two messages on social media that threaten their professional integrity. One is an audio recording and the other is a written statement.
Both make unsubstantiated comments about GAF, which need to be corrected.
The audio recording of an unidentified male voice alleges the relocation of “gadgets” from Accra to Ho, to intimidate the people of the Volta and Oti Regions in collaboration with a neighboring country.
The fact is that the GAF has been deployed in all regions of Ghana in connection with the 2020 general elections.
The deployment is in support of the Ghana Police Service and this is standard practice. There is no other reason.
The second is a statement from the alleged “Interested Officers of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service”.
This piece is a catalog of falsehoods and fabrications without an iota of truth in them.
Among the accusations are that the vigilantes are integrated into the GAF and that there is a “coordinated ground offensive” planned from the eastern border on the night of December 6.
This could be an orchestration or a story planted to cause alarm among the local population.
All ranks of GAF are asked to carry out their duties with their usual focus and determination, to ensure the success of the elections.
The general public should also feel free to cast their vote when the polls open on December 7, 2020.
