Thibaut Courtois’ performances in the 2019/20 season were excellent, and his victory in the Zamora trophy was key to Real Madrid’s triumph in LaLiga Santander, but the wall he built last season is rapidly collapsing in 2020/21.
After conceding just 20 goals in 34 games last season, and Alphonse Areola conceded the other four, statistics showed the former Chelsea goalkeeper was allowing just 0.59 goals per game.
This record ended Jan Oblak’s absolute dominance over the award, and the Slovenian won it every year from 2015 to 2019.
However, it was the third Zamora de Courtois trophy stemming from his years with Atlético de Madrid, although it is almost certain that he will not add a fourth this season.
In eight games this season, Courtois has already conceded nine goals, four of them in the 4-1 win that Los Merengues received at the hands of Valencia.
His average is currently 1.13 goals per game, while Oblak has been as reliable as ever, conceding just 0.29 goals per game on average this season.
Alex Remiro has been almost as impressive, conceding just four goals in nine games, which roughly equates to around 0.44 goals per game.
Despite his slump in form, few consider Courtois to blame for Los Blancos’ lapses this season, as the defensive structure ahead of him simply didn’t exist.
Ironically, the Belgian has made more saves in total than Remiro and Oblak, showing the barrage of opposing opportunities he faces in every match.
