The ruling New Patriotic Party has accused the National Democratic opposition of stoking tribal sentiments over electoral achievements in the ongoing presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to the party, the NDC is resorting to mischief and lies as the polls draw to a close.
At a press conference in Accra on Monday, a deputy campaign manager for the Mustapha Hamid party said that the NDC is anticipating defeat, hence its baseless accusations.
“Why are you calling the Volta region to rescue you? no one is going to rescue you, your campaign has failed. You are a Volta party, I thought you are a national party. If they have indeed discovered illegal activities, they should go to the police and report those incidents, ”he said.
Meanwhile, the director of Elections for the opposition Democratic National Congress, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has asked the party’s electoral agents to remain vigilant during the counting of the ballots as the polls approach closing.
According to the party, the ruling PNP’s efforts to manipulate the elections are being monitored and thwarted.
“We call on all of our officers and all Ghanaians to be vigilant. When the voting is over and the count begins, go to the voting table and check the count. And we ask our electoral agents to be more vigilant during the vote counting, especially in the Ashanti region, ”Afriyie Ankrah said at a press conference in Accra on Monday.
He also noted that the NDC is confident of victory at the close of the polls.
NDC alleges fraud in Ashanti region
The Democratic National Congress has alleged that some EC officials in various polling stations in the Ashanti region are instructing voters to vote for PNP candidates in both parliamentary and presidential elections.
At a press conference on Monday, NDC Ashanti regional secretary Kwame Zu alleged that various EC officials in Adansi Asokwa and other constituencies were helping and directing voters to vote for the PNP candidate.
The NDC also alleged that incumbent MP KT Hammond, in the company of some thugs, screwed up the peaceful voting process and attempted to intimidate some voters.
The NDC, amid a litany of allegations, also claimed that some voters in Ejisu received already thumb-printed ballots and urged voters to leave them at the polls.
Zu alleged that the thumb-printed ballots were secretly made at the Georgia hotel, according to his sources. The party also claimed that the EC in some polling stations was using a new yellow ink for validation.
Ghanaians are voting at the polls today, Monday, December 7, 2020 to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians.
More than 17 million voters are expected to participate in the exercise. The figure is 2 million more than the number of voters who voted in the previous 2016 elections.
The electoral commission has said that more than 33,000 polling stations have been dedicated for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
