The United States government has called the establishment of a transitional government in Mali “an initial step towards a return to democracy.”
US State Department spokesman Morgan Ortagus urged the transitional government to fulfill the promise of holding elections within 18 months.
“It will also be important for the transitional government to deliver on its promises to the Malian people to strengthen governance, combat corruption, reform electoral processes and implement the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali,” he said in a statement.
Ms. Ortagus said that the United States will continue to be Mali’s partner and will work to achieve the goals of a better Mali:

In August, the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, condemned the “mutiny” in Mali and called on all political and military actors to work for the restoration of a constitutional government.
The US envoy to the Sahel, J. Peter Pham, said the country had suspended cooperation with the Malian army after the coup.
Some of the coup leaders had been trained in the United States.
