Martial Akakpo, the Togolese government lawyer hired by the Volta secessionist groups to represent them in the International Criminal Court at the UN, has confirmed that the people reached out.

GhanaWeb’s independent checks at the law firm Martial Akakpo and Associates revealed that the renowned Togolese lawyer has agreed to follow the agenda of the western Togolese secessionists.

However, Akakpo declined to release further information when asked to provide more details on the level of participation, noting that “at this time we have no comment.”

On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, Togo’s media Focus Info reported that Martial Akakpo from the Association of Civil and Professional Lawyers (SCP) agreed to represent the secessionist group.

This was after the member of parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whose area had hardly been attacked by secessionists, ruled that the suspects were of Togolese descent based on the intelligence gathered.

31 of the alleged West Togolese secessionists who participated in atrocities in the Volta region are facing prosecution after they were detained by security agencies.

The activities of members of secessionist groups have been widely condemned by various stakeholders and the government described them as crimes to be addressed accordingly.

Meanwhile, finally reacting to events, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that he will deal with the secessionists.

According to him, he is very calm about what is happening in the Volta region because the institutions are in place and they are working assiduously to bring normality to the region.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has also added that there will be no negotiations with the secessionists in western Togo, noting that when they are arrested, they will be forced to face all the rigors of the law for their criminal acts.
