Spain’s morning newspapers have turned their attention to the Champions League quarter-final draw, in which 13-time winner Real Madrid faced Liverpool six times.
There is a lot of history between the two teams in the Champions League, most recently in 2018, where Real Madrid claimed the trophy after a dramatic 3-1 victory.
The draw gives Liverpool change to avenge a heartbreaking defeat nearly three years later, as they battle for a place in the semi-finals.
The Spanish newspaper AS has titled the clash as a ‘duel of 19 champions’, with two of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament.
The winner of the tie will face Chelsea or Porto in the semi-finals, but AS skipped that stage and said Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain are the most likely finalists for Zinedine Zidane’s team.
Marca ran with the headline ‘this team wants more’ using an image from the 2018 final, where Mo Salah suffered a shoulder injury in a challenge with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.
They say that the 2018 final in Kiev is the definitive setting for the quarterfinal clash, although Los Blancos may not be able to play in Madrid due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Salah was eliminated midway through the first half of the 2018 final, in a game that he unraveled for the Reds in spectacular style.
Goalkeeper Lloris Karius made two costly mistakes, while Gareth Bale scored one of the greatest final goals of all time with his header.
Liverpool would make up for the loss a year later and claim the trophy for the sixth time after a 2-0 win over Tottenham.
Zinedine Zidane, who led the Spanish giants that day, said Liverpool “will demand a lot” from Real Madrid in both stages.
In his press conference after the draw he said: ‘We know the difficulties of the game. At this level all the teams are very good and very difficult.
It will also be a very demanding match. Liverpool are going to demand a lot from us physically.
‘It will be a good game between two teams that have won many Champions. At that level, it’s always very difficult to win. ‘
The first leg that will currently be played in Madrid will be played on April 6 and the return match at Anfield on April 14.
