Emmanuel Sowatey, a criminologist at the Cambridge University Institute of Criminology, has stated that the deployment of police personnel to members of Parliament does not necessarily guarantee their safety.
Speaking with Evan Mensah at Ghana Connect, he advised Security Services to analyze the resources armed men have and strategize on how they can proactively deal with those threats.
“The safety of the parliamentarians cannot be guaranteed by a single policeman, even if the person has a fully loaded AK 47 that is 90 rounds, he cannot because he needs to know the type of threat he is facing,” he said.
According to him, an insecure society endangers a policeman, and a policeman in danger brings no benefit to the parliamentarian.
This is due to the government’s decision to send personal bodyguards to all parliamentarians to ensure their protection.
This was stated by the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, in Parliament when he unveiled some of the measures instituted to counter the growing incidents of attacks on public officials in the country.
Speaking to journalists after his speech to Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Dery explained that the measure, which takes effect immediately, will facilitate the activities of members in the performance of their services in the interest of the country.
“The government admits that the recent series of attacks on public officials has made it imperative that this deployment begins,” he said.
