The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says that the recent increase in the price of cocoa production by the government is aimed at influencing the vote of farmers in the 2020 elections.
He said the government paid no heed to calls for annual increases in the price of cocoa production from 2017 until the impending elections, when it saw the need to do so.
Addressing separate durbars in Bonsu Nkwanta, Mafia and Boinzan in the Juaboso constituency of the north western region, Mahama noted that the increase in the price of cocoa is to cover up the government’s failures in the cocoa sector and manipulate the decision. vote of cocoa. farmers.
“So the increase is due to the fact that the election is close and the government wants to use it to influence the vote of farmers,” he said.
He said the NDC government, when elected, will reintroduce the annual increase in cocoa production price to allow cocoa producers to benefit from their work, adding that bonuses on the cocoa production price will be reinstated. in the next NDC government.
Mahama said that when given the mandate in the elections on December 7, 2020, the next NDC administration will establish a pension plan for cocoa farmers to take care of them when they retire.
Playing on the cacao trails, the NDC presidential candidate questioned the wisdom of the government’s decision to abandon those projects. He said that most of the cocoa route projects would have been completed long ago if the NDC had stayed in the last election.
Mahama said that when elected, the next NDC government will continue with the cocoa roads project to facilitate the transportation of cocoa beans. Therefore, he urged voters to vote for the NDC in the upcoming elections on December 7.
For his part, Boinzan gyaasehene Nana Awuah Bonenka II endorsed Mahama’s candidacy, saying he was impressed with the huge infrastructure development delivered by the Mahama administration.
