The first vice president of the ruling New Patriotic Party in Mfantseman, Yaw Berchie Nuako, has defended the party’s decision to select the wife of Mfantseman’s slain MP, Ophelia Hayford, to succeed him as the parliamentary candidate for constituency.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the first vice president stated that party supporters repeatedly indicated that they wanted the late deputy’s wife to succeed her.

He added that the leaders listened to the decision of the people and decided to accept their points of view.

Concerned polling station executives and Mfantseman’s youth on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, threatened to boycott the December 2020 election if the late deputy’s wife was not allowed to replace him.

“PNP supporters in Mfantseman and sympathizers were there and shouting without a wife, without a vote. They also dressed her in the colors of the NPP and said that she is the one they want to succeed her husband and with that, everyone supported the movement.

Yaw Berchie stated that members of the PNP were present at the week-long celebration when the acclamation was made.

He added that Ms Hayford was chosen without going through the normal procedure because “we cannot waste money and time at this crucial moment.”

The first vice president argued that Ms. Hayford was a legible candidate because she has been part of the party since her husband was a deputy in 2016.

She added that she served in the party and assisted in campaign activities as a member would.
