Ahmed Yaahya, president of the Mauritanian Football Federation (FFIRM), has announced his intention to run for the presidency of the African Football Confederation (CAF) next year.

Yahya had been at the helm of the FFIRM since 2011 and was re-elected for a third term last year after the recent success of Mauritania.

They were named 2018 CAF Team of the Year after qualifying for AFCON 2019 in Egypt.

Despite exiting the tournament in the group stage, Mauritania managed to draw against Angola and Tunisia.

Yahya became the fourth candidate to announce his candidacy for the CAF presidential election next year.

“After many reflections and discussions, I have decided to submit my candidacy,” announced Yahya on Twitter.

It will face competition from current CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, Jacques Anouma from Côte d’Ivoire and Mamelodi Sundowns President Patrice Motsepe.

The CAF elections are scheduled for March, as the nominees have begun to present their candidacy before the deadline on Thursday, November 12.
