The standard-bearer for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has promised that his party, if voted into office, will empower the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to do more in educating Ghanaians about governance.

Speaking on the AM show on Joy News on Monday, Brigitte Dzogbenuku stated that based on her observations, the NCCE lacked the resources to carry out its mandate effectively.

“I want the NCCE to have better resources to educate people, and that is something that the PPP will do when we are in government, that is to provide resources to the NCCE.”

Furthermore, the PPP as a ruling party, according to Brigitte, would allow Ghanaians to elect their leaders at the local level.

“Ghanaians have been made afraid of pursuing their own dream of what they want Ghana to be, and a prime example is the opportunity taken from Ghanaians to vote for their own local leaders; DCE and MMDCE, ”he said.

“There is a great outcry in our communities and nobody is held accountable because the DCE is appointed.”

Brigitte Dzogbenuku observed that governments over the years have taken advantage of the perceived notion that Ghanaians “ignore” governance issues.

“I think governments have enjoyed, for lack of a better word, the ignorance or bad education of Ghanaians in politics or governance so the less they know the more dedicated they are to any of them [NDC and NPP]. “

According to her, past governments often tend to rule rather than rule the people, and if voted for power, the PPP would rule differently by taking a second look at the fundamentals of Ghana’s constitution and making the fixes from there.

“The main way that we are doing things differently is by revisiting the fundamentals of the Constitution and changing them.”
