The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will not turn to the National Peace Council to help resolve complaints about alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
The party has been accusing the Electoral Commission (EC) of being complicit in alleged attempts by the ruling New Patriotic Party to repress voters and gain an advantage at the polls.
More recently, he has accused the EC of removing the names of voters in NDC strongholds.
When asked whether the NDC will consider submitting a petition to the Peace Council about the concerns at a press conference on Thursday, the party’s general secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, accused the council of being complicit in the issues.
“They themselves are aware of the problem, so they should call us … We do not believe that the solutions to this problem are in the Peace Council,” said Mr. Nketia.
He said the council had not been able to resolve previous disputes in the electoral process.
“They have followed this process. We have given you all our questions related to the preparations for this election. From day one to date we have not found any single solution from that platform, “he said.
In further criticism, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said that the council was aware of some of the alleged irregularities monitored by the Election Commission.
He made specific mention of the printing of new voter IDs outside of the registration process that the EC has said it sanctioned.
“We assume that the printing of the cards on our blind side was done with the advice of the committee of eminent persons so that [the Peace Council] they have been excluded from opinion leaders whom we should consult to find solutions because they are part of the problem ”.
The press conference was in response to the challenges NDC supporters say they have been encountering in the voter registration display process.
The party’s standard bearer, John Mahama, canceled his tour of the Bono region to speak at the press conference.
He has asked the international community to take a closer look at the conduct of the EC.
He also wants the voter registration display process to extend beyond the two additional days already announced by the commission.
The Commission has already denied the claims submitted by the NDC.
In a statement, the EC insisted that “at each point, we have provided factual, accurate and evidence-based information to our stakeholders on voter statistics by region, district, gender, age, among others.”
