The National Peace Council (NPC) has asked Ghanaians to remain in peace after the Supreme Court ruling on the Petition for Presidential Election.

A statement issued by the Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, President of the Peace Council, copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Second Respondent and former President John Dramani Mahama, the petitioner in the Electoral Petition, publicly subscribed to the Accra Declaration of Peace in which, among other things: They committed themselves and their supporters to peaceful elections in the December 2020 elections.

He said the duo were committed to the judicial resolution of all electoral disputes and vowed to prevent their supporters from resorting to violence after the elections.

The Council said that both NPP and NDC in 2020 publicly signed a Code of Conduct and Roadmap on eradicating political vigilantism and election-related violence on the grounds that they were enemies of Ghana’s democratic system.

The statement said that in 2019, Parliament also unanimously passed the Surveillance and Politically Related Crimes Act of 2019 (Law 999) to ban vigilantism in all its forms.

He said that in accordance with previous statements and enactments, the APN respectfully appealed to all parties to the dispute to adhere strictly to the Supreme Court ruling, regardless of who won or lost in the pending judgment.

The statement read: “In this regard, we encourage all supporters of the two political parties not to engage in any activity that is a potential threat to the peace of Ghana.”

He asked the media, social and political commentators to be prudent in their reports and discussions after the Supreme Court passed its ruling to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the State.

“The Peace Council respectfully appeals to all the people of Ghana to continue to use time-tested non-violent mechanisms to address any outstanding election-related complaints in a peaceful manner, either through the judicial process or through available alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, “he said. .

He said that the National Peace Council and its Regional Peace Councils were willing to facilitate the resolution of such electoral disputes.
