The minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, says the eighth parliament will not support the investigation and approval of the ministers of state and their deputies that exceed 70 appointments.
The Tamale South MP said that whoever is declared the ‘winner’ of the presidency should slash and drastically reduce the size of government to protect the public purse.
Speaking to Adom News on a number of issues, the Tamale South MP insisted that a country like Ghana should have no more than 120 ministers.
“I am not going to, whether I am a majority or minority leader, negotiate with any president the reduction of his government because it is an obligation.
“Parliament must not allow any president to appoint ministers and their deputies over 70. I want it to reflect that the public wants to preserve public resources and their prudent use.
“You have to provide accommodation, security and vehicles, be it four wheels or salon cars, they all have a price that can be used to care for a pregnant woman and a sick child somewhere,” he said.
Mr. Iddrissu then asked, “Why should I have 120 ministers for a small country like Ghana?”
On the nomination of the next speaker of the eighth parliament, the Tamale South MP said the next parliament needs a politically neutral speaker to oversee the proceedings of the House.
“For Speaker of Parliament, you will need someone who stands above reproach, above partisanship, who abides by the rules and has an unmatched commitment to the good of Ghana, and who holds both sides of the house united for the good of Ghana and do not serve any parish interest, ”he said.
