The National Identification Authority (NIA) has contested opposition from the Democratic National Congress (NDC) that it is working to help the new Patriotic Party (PNP) manipulate this year’s general election.

In a press release signed on Friday by the Authority’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Francis Palmdeti denied all claims made by NDC National President Samuel Ofosu Ampofo at a press conference on Thursday.

The NIA responded to all eight complaints and in all cases made clear what its establishment mandate is.

Regarding the NDC’s claim that the NIA and the EC are acting in concert to manipulate the 2020 elections, the Authority said it is not part of the electoral management architecture in the country.

“There is no conspiracy between the NIA and the EC to manipulate the 2020 elections. Election fraud is a serious criminal matter with serious political, economic, and social consequences for any nation.

“Any person, party or institution that alleges such a criminal conspiracy has a duty to report it to the police and provide the necessary evidence to support investigations and / or prosecution,” he said.

The NDC claimed that the exclusion of voter identification as a registration requirement for the Ghana card was illegal and illegitimate.

In response, the NIA said: “This statement is most surprising. Parliament made the amendment to section 8 of Act 750 to exclude the voter ID card, driver’s license, baptismal certificates, and weigh-in cards as valid registration requirements without a wail of opposition or protest from any member of parliament.

“The exclusive reliance on birth certificates, passports, and acquired citizenship certificates was supported by the NDC in Parliament. In fact, the amendments received the unconditional backing of minority MPs in Parliament, and the MPs who spoke about the bill were mainly on the minority side, and each of them enthusiastically supported the amendments. ”
