Acting Finance Minister and Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has stated that the construction of the Ghana National Cathedral remains a priority for the government.
According to him, although the pandemic affected the progress of construction, the building works are ongoing.
“Sir. Speaker, the National Cathedral of Ghana, which will provide an interdenominational sacred space for the nation, remains a national priority. Despite the delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, work is ongoing to construct the building. iconic in the heart of the country’s capital ”, he stated.
Among other things, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, introducing the ‘WƆN YA WƆ HIƐƐ BUDGET’, stated that “the construction of the National Cathedral is already introducing some critical innovations in the country”.
“As part of the construction, more than 200 trees on the Cathedral site, some of which are almost 100 years old, have been relocated to a temporary site by the Department of Parks and Gardens.
“Some of the trees would be brought back once the Cathedral was completed, and others would be replanted elsewhere, making the building environmentally sustainable.
In 2019, Finance Minister-designate Ken Ofori-Atta revealed that the construction of the National Cathedral is estimated to cost more than $ 100 million.
The government has already demolished the judges’ houses located on the proposed site for the construction of the National Cathedral at Ridge in Accra.
He has also selected the renowned architect Sir David Adjaye to design the building.
The construction of the Cathedral is the fulfillment of a promise that President Akufo-Addo revealed that he made to God before winning the 2016 elections.
The 5,000-seat Auditorium Cathedral project will also bequeath the country an elegant national park for all Ghanaians, bring new skills, technology and jobs to the country, and act as a beacon for national, regional and international tourists.
