The West Theme Municipal Assembly has provided free medical exams to more than 500 seniors in commemoration of International Senior Citizen Day.

The theme of the celebration was called “Pandemics: Are they changing the way we approach aging and aging?”

Tema West Municipal Director Madam Clara Sowah said her team offered separate programs for seniors in and around Adjei-Kojo, Sakumono, Klagon and the surrounding areas, among others.

With the help of the Tema Polyclinic, health screenings and general medical health problems were carried out for the elderly free of charge.

Older people also received education on nutrition, dementia, proper medical care, and issues related to Covid-19.

According to Madam Sowah, the majority of the elderly in Tema West have been included in the Livelihoods Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program.

Since then, new registrations have been made to enroll more seniors.

In addition, he said that the Assembly would do everything possible to pressure the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to approve the enrollment of more older people in LEAP as a way to protect them.

In addition, he admonished young people to care for the elderly in their homes and in society, as they are a repository of knowledge and culture that must be preserved.

“Let’s treat the elderly well because we will all grow up one day,” he added.
