The MTN Ghana Foundation has formally commissioned and delivered to the Ghana Institute of Public Administration and Management (GIMPA) a state-of-the-art 750,000 Ghc ICT laboratory.
This gesture from the MTN Ghana Foundation is to help drive the emerging technology revolution and help the GIMPA School of Technology meet emerging trends.
The facility consists of two offices, a conference room, men’s and women’s bathrooms.
Mr. Franklyn Manu, President of MTN Foundation Ghana, who unveiled the installation plaque expressed his enthusiasm for the successful completion of the project and revealed that the project began during the term of the previous Dean of the School of Technology.
His enthusiasm emanates from the fact that the current Dean continued the project to the end. “As you know, in Ghana, there is always the problem that when someone is successful in a person, projects are thrown away, but I must congratulate Dr. Joe Adjei for his persistence in pushing us” to complete the project.
He explained that technology is very important, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, to help us deliver projects and programs, thereby reducing physical contact.
“We are realizing that there are opportunities with technology. So I am very hopeful that this lab will help with the introduction of the Master of Telecommunications Engineering [which the school intends to introduce]”He added.
In addition, it revealed that the installation cost approximately 750,000 Ghc.
On behalf of the Institute, the Deputy Rector, Professor Martin Morgan Tuuli expressed his appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation for supporting the School of Technology and called on other corporate organizations to emulate MTN’s gesture.
He underscored the essence of the students’ hands-on experience and maintained that “GIMPA is a unique institution in the sense that we ensure that our students not only acquire academic skills, but also have practical knowledge. So this lab essentially gives us that space where students can have hands-on experience. ”
When asked by modernghana News about how the facilities will be maintained considering the poor maintenance culture in Ghana, the Dean of the School of Technology, Dr. Joseph Adjei explained that GIMPA has introduced a technology fee paid by students and that it is will be channeled towards the maintenance of the facilities. .
“What GIMPA does is that there are several proposals that will be considered by the GIMPA board, but one of the ideas is that we take some kind of technology fee.
Apart from that, we are doing a business incubation here and any project that comes out of here as a commercial project, the school will benefit in economic terms and everyone will contribute to the maintenance of the equipment ”, he hinted.
On behalf of MTN for the maintenance of the facility, Mr. Franklyn Manu said that the MTN Foundation has a maintenance plan for all the projects it finances.
He explained that MTN Ghana Foundation grantees are generally tasked with setting up a Maintenance Committee that includes MTN Foundation staff to do a regular review and ensure things don’t fall apart.
“Then we will not do it ourselves but we will be part of the maintenance program,” he added.
