‘The mood was too calm’: PSG coach Tuchel had a hunch before Manchester United defeat

The French champions were second best at home to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who won 2-1 after a late goal by Marcus Rashford.

Thomas Tuchel has admitted he had an odd feeling in the locker room ahead of PSG’s 2-1 home loss to Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Red Devils took a lead in the first half at Parc des Princes when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after Keylor Navas saved his original penalty but was later ordered to be replayed due to goalkeeper intrusion.

Anthony Martial’s own goal in the second half tied the game, but Marcus Rashford scored a spectacular goal in the 87th minute to help lift the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In his post-match press conference, PSG manager Tuchel said he felt his team was “a little too calm” ahead of their first Group H game.

“The atmosphere in the locker room was too calm before the game,” Tuchel said. “I had a strange feeling. Usually we listen to music at a very high volume. I had the impression that it was too quiet.

“As for the rest, it was not the time to get angry. We had to improve, but we clearly said that we lacked intensity and aggressiveness. It was necessary to show another attitude.”

Talking to RMC Sport, Tuchel said he barely recognized the team he saw Tuesday after winning five straight Ligue 1 games.

“We missed a lot of things, offensively and defensively. It was not a game at our level, not at all, whether in the offensive or defensive phase, technically, tactically, in our intensity and against pressure,” Tuchel said.

“It wasn’t us, clearly. Now is not the time to get mad and lose our minds. We have to be very honest with ourselves and be critical as always. It was a very difficult start for us.”

Tuchel added that he hoped his team could better control the home game, but Solskjaer’s men made that task too difficult for them.

“We lacked pace and intensity,” said the German. “However, we were well prepared.

“[Am I] angry? Not because they are the same players who have done good things in the last games and months. Today was difficult, I don’t know why, but it was.

“It was not difficult to play a better second half [than first half]but it was too open. We didn’t have the ability to control the game. ”

PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe echoed his coach’s disappointment that his team was not in full swing on Tuesday.

“There is no explanation, we just weren’t good,” Kimpembe said. “We weren’t in the duels and we were behind in the defensive backs.

“We can only blame ourselves. We were not surprised by their starting eleven. It’s just that we were not good. We did not approach the game well and we did not finish it well. It is a shame to lose points like that, we will have to raise our heads.”
