The Designated Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, has mounted a strong defense regarding his role in disenfranchising the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi (SALL) in the parliamentary elections of 2020.

During his background investigation on Monday, the former Minister of Reorganization and Regional Development said his team was not bound by the country’s supreme laws to create constituencies or constituencies.

In his opinion, this position falls on the Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Local Government. As such, he and the Ministry he represented in Akufo-Addo’s first term (which has since been ruled out) cannot be held responsible for the disenfranchisement of SALL residents in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

“Mr. President, allow me to emphasize that the Ministry of Reorganization and Regional Development for the case as a former minister, we had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the creation of districts or circumscriptions by the Electoral Commission and that is why I do not have to answer these questions. unless for educational purposes.

In response to a petition sent to the Chairman of the Committee against his appointment, he stated:

“But when people have petitioned, it is necessary to educate them on what they do not understand or deliberately do not want to understand what the constitution says.

“People can have problems with the Electoral Commission’s decision not to allow them to vote in parliamentary elections. It is a matter for the EC but it has nothing to do with the Ministry of Regional Reorganization ”, he told the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Although Mohammed Muntaka, the head of the minority, agreed with the Okyere deputy on his team’s duties, he stressed that the division of the Volta region is what set the matter in motion.

Indeed, he believes that although the functions of the Ministry of Reorganization and Regional Development did not include the creation of constituencies or districts, the former minister could have helped solve problems when they arose.

“Mr. President, I totally agree with the nominee, if he talks about his role. But the thing is, once you start the process, the next one kicks in. If they were not added to a constituency, they will be left hanging.

“So yes, in principle you can say that because you were Minister of Regional Reorganization you are not the Electoral Commission to create electoral districts, nor are you the Minister of Local Government, so it is not your duty to create a district. But their unleashed action to create the demarcation has created a problem that needed to be solved, ”said Muntaka.

A joint committee from the traditional areas of Akpafu and Lolobi has already asked the Parliament Appointments Committee to reject the appointment of Daniel Botwe to head the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development.

The Committee, in a statement, blamed Mr. Botwe for his important role in the expulsion of Lolobi and Akpafu from Hohoe Township despite their objection.
