The media does not hold Akufo-Addo – Mahama sufficiently responsible

NDC opposition standard-bearer John Mahama has accused the media of failing to hold President Akufo-Addo accountable for promises made before taking office in 2017.

This is due to the former president’s accusations that President Akufo-Addo has failed in his fight against the ‘galamsey’ in the country, thus risking his presidency.

Mahama blamed part of the problem on the media for not exposing the rottenness in the government’s galamsey struggle despite knowing the truth.

“The media are not holding the government responsible despite knowing what is happening in the galamsey sector,” he said in an interview with journalists from The Multimedia Group.

He accused the government of seizing concessions belonging to the citizen of Ghana and handing them over to members of his party.

“So if you go to the mining communities, the presidents of the PNP parties and the DCEs are actively in the galamsey business,” he said.

He also added that the high level of scrutiny exercised by the media during his tenure has diminished during the Akufo-Addo era.

This, he said, has contributed to the president keeping part of a promise made before taking office or not keeping some promises at all.

“Government officials have never been involved in galamsey in our time compared to now.

“Akufo-Addo has failed when it comes to fighting Galamsey and he probably shouldn’t even run for office,” he said.

He also referred to the president’s promise to vacate his seat if he failed to completely eradicate Galamsey from the country.

President Akufo-Addo in 2017 risked his presidency with a commitment to end illegal mining in the country.

Even though the government introduced the ‘Operation Vanguard’ task force to assist in the struggle, Mahama says the government has failed abysmally with the introduction of the struggle.

Therefore, he has asked President Akufo-Addo to resign from the Presidency, in line with his promise.
