The Nelson Mandela Foundation responded to comments attributed to US President Donald Trump about the anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
The comments are from a new book by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, published Tuesday.
In the book, Cohen claims that Trump made racist comments about Nelson Mandela, allegedly saying that the late South African president “was not a leader.”
“Tell me a country run by a black person that is not shit. They are all complete [expletive] toilets, ”Trump once said, according to Cohen.
The White House says the lawyer is lying.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has said that it did not believe that “leaders who behave as Trump does are in a position to offer authoritative comments on the life and work of Madiba.”
“Reflecting on leadership, Madiba once said: ‘A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and fully, knowing that in the end he and the other side must be closer and therefore emerge stronger. You don’t have that idea when you’re arrogant, shallow, and uninformed. ‘ We recommend these words to Mr. Trump for his consideration, ”the foundation said in a statement.
