The Greater Accra Region Chamber of Chiefs has added its voice to the calls for peace following the December 7 elections.

The members of the House led by its Speaker, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, who is also the Supreme Head of the Osu Traditional Council, demand an end to the “riots and violence” related to the elections in the country’s capital.

“As traditional rulers of the Greater Accra region, we consider it our duty to ensure that all citizens can carry out their daily activities in an environment free from violence,” the Chamber said in a statement issued on Friday, December 18.

“This is why we want to add our voice to the call for peace and an end to the riots and violence related to the 2020 elections.”
This comes as a result of scattered demonstrations by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) across the country.

Protesting mainly at the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) headquarters in Accra, NDC supporters want the results of the elections declared on Wednesday 9 December to be turned in favor of their presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Mahama himself, a couple of days after EC President Jean Mensa declared the results, said that he won and that the will of the people had been subverted.

But the leaders of the Greater Accra region insist that Ghana’s elections have been hailed around the world as a success.

They said that since the country is based on a constitution and governed by law, “any disagreement regarding any aspect of the electoral process must be addressed and resolved using the appropriate procedures prescribed by law.”

Therefore, they expressed dismay at the trend of events unfolding in different parts of the country, especially in the Greater Accra region.

“Therefore, we unequivocally condemn the acts of violence and anarchy related to the declaration of the electoral result that are being perpetrated,” the statement said.

“This is not a reflection of the Ghana that we want to build for future generations.

“We wish to remind all parties involved that Ghana is for all of us and that such acts do not bode well for the peace and unity that we have fought for decades to build for our country.

“Such acts rather feed disunity, division and hateful traits that have no place in our beloved nation.”

The bosses are ultimately calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians to desist from acts that will cloud the peace enjoyed over the years.
