Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), publishers of the Daily Graphic and other brands, has organized a free breast screening exercise for residents of Adabraka and the surrounding areas in Accra.

Last Saturday’s exercise, conducted in collaboration with Franklin Medical Center, was one of the company’s activities toward celebrating this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrated every year in October.

Initiative

The initiative was also used to educate the public about breast cancer, its symptoms, treatment and other relevant aspects.

This year, the breast cancer awareness campaign has been dubbed “Early Detection Saves Lives” in keeping with advocating constant screening among the public for possible early detection, if the condition existed in an individual.

Franklin Medical Center’s Manager of Clinical Services, Dr. Mawusi Kemetse, explained that the many screening programs conducted in the communities had helped more people participate.

Through those programs, she said, women were empowered by receiving counseling and their fears about breast cancer allayed.
He said there was a need for people to take advantage of these screening initiatives.

“Community screening programs are underway; get involved so early detection can be done, ”he said.

Diet

Dr. Kemetse further explained that in many parts of the world, many people did not die from breast cancer as experienced in Ghana and Africa, and advocated for lifestyle change.

She said it was good to adopt a healthy diet, lifestyle changes, and a preventive health culture by checking your breasts frequently.

A healthy lifestyle, he said, was a way to provide the body with some necessary nutrients to repair damage that might have occurred in the body.

In addition, he advised people to adhere to a healthy and balanced diet, exercise well, and undergo routine medical examinations.
