The government will not negotiate with secessionist criminal groups, it does not make sense – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia says the government does not participate in groups claiming to be campaigning for the independence of an imaginary state of western Togo.

He said the groups and their lawsuits are criminal and as such the government will not involve them under any circumstances in the matter.

He indicated that granting a hearing to the separatists will open the government to many of those illegal demands for secession.

“Negotiation with criminals? Based on what? Then we will be open to many things and tomorrow you are going somewhere and another group will also come and tell you that it is the northern territories. [seeking independence]. That will not happen. It doesn’t make sense, ”the vice president said in an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday.

Dr. Bawumia insisted that the western Togo area is non-existent and is just an invention of people making such demands.

“It does not exist. The Mamprusis, Gonjas, Oti people are part of Ghana. They have expressed no interest in going anywhere, so where is this invention from western Togo? Where is it? Is it Ho? Kpando or Kpeve “There is no legal basis for these lawsuits. It is criminal and that is why Ghana must unite … Some criminals are trying to twist history and engage in criminal activity,” said Dr. Bawumia.

The government is currently holding 31 people believed to be members of a separatist group that blocked the main roads in Juapong-Accra and Sogakope-Accra, raided police stations and stole some state assets last Friday.

That incident has rejuvenated national discussions about separatist groups that have sprung up in the country with the goal of gaining independence from Ghana.

According to Bawumia, the situation is cause for concern and Ghanaians must unite to stop it.

“From that point of view, we should all be concerned and we should do everything and [government] I would do my best to stop it. We must not allow any criminal to endanger [our peace],” he said.

Additionally, he expressed confidence in the approach of the country’s security agencies to address the situation while urging the public to support the government in its quest to silence those groups.
