Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that 80% of secondary schools across the country have received free Wi-Fi connections sponsored by the government.
This aims to broaden the reach of education, information, communication and technology (ICT), research and knowledge acquisition in these institutions.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show on Wednesday, he admitted that the project is winding down earlier than expected.
According to him, he thought it would be finished next year 2021.
The initiative was announced by the vice president in early 2020 at a town hall meeting in Kumasi.
“We promised to provide free Wi-Fi to our secondary schools and fortunately the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful have worked very hard on this. I really salute you for this. At least 80% of all of our upper secondary schools are now connected to free Wi-Fi, that’s the information we have, ”he said.
He noted that the system is being tested before it is approved for use.
Dr. Bawumia further said that the 260 district education offices and 46 education colleges in the country are also beneficiaries of the system.
“That is an important step for us to allow digitization to drive our educational process,” said the host, Philip Osei Bonsu.
On September 14, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful revealed that the government will launch free Wi-Fi for upper secondary schools (SHS) in October 2020.
Speaking at the climax of the 2020 annual Girls in ICT Day in the Oti region, she said that this is part of the government’s initiative to close the digital skills gap in the information and communication technology sector. (TIC).
