The minority in Parliament accuses the government of granting tax breaks worth more than 600 million dollars to 15 companies allegedly belonging to cronies of the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP) under the guise of a district, a factory.
Currently, the government is seeking Parliament’s approval for exemption from import duties, import VAT, GETFund levy, NHIL, and EXIM levy on machinery, equipment, and raw materials to be procured by selected entities under the program of a district, a factory.
These entities include Keda Ghana Ceramics Company Limited, Sunda Ghana Limited, Happy Sunshine Company Ghana Limited, Sinostone Alcohol Manufacturing Limited, Appah Farms Limited, among others.
But speaking to Class91.3FM parliamentary correspondent Charles Akrofi, a minority member of the Commerce and Industry committee, Yusif Sulemana accused the government of selectivity in granting tax breaks.
He said: “These are waivers for your relatives and cronies.
“The information we have collected is that if you do not belong to the PNP or if you are not a member of the president’s family and request this exemption, forget it, you will not receive it.
“Three companies have come to complain that they applied for a long time and they have not responded. Meanwhile, in their opinion, they believe that they have met all the requirements.
“Especially, one of them was able to tell me that he applied on the same day, at the same time with another person who is a known person of NPP and that the exemption of that person was recently approved, he has not even received any response and his friends told him: ‘I told you, if you don’t belong to us, you’re going to suffer’ and then he called me to tell me that’s what’s happening.
“And for us, these exemptions that we are talking about are good, but they are only intended for your family members, your party members and your cronies, and that is not the way to develop or grow an economy like that. our.
“If someone has what it takes to benefit from such an exemption and be able to create more jobs and value our raw materials, why not?
He said he is forced to mention names out of fear that the government will stigmatize people as they are still pushing for exemptions.
