President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended the free water package in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) until the end of the year.

According to the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the measure is to allow Ghanaians to continue with the protocol of hand washing in the fight against the virus.

The minister, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, urged Ghanaians to use water wisely.

In his fifth address to the nation on the coronavirus outbreak on April 5 of this year, President Akufo-Addo announced that the public would enjoy the free water supply from the GWCL during the months of April, May and June 2020, as part of interventions to help stop the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

As part of precautionary measures to stop the spread, health experts have recommended washing hands with clean water under the tap for at least 20 seconds and this requires access to an uninterrupted water supply, hence the government directive.

It was later extended from June to September 2020.
