The government does not treat the secessionist groups of Volta – Mahama seriously

Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo and his government of not showing seriousness in dealing with secessionist groups in the Volta region.

The groups have caused significant unrest in the Volta region since they blocked the main roads to and from the Volta region and attacked the Mepe and Ayeyime police stations.

Speaking through a live Facebook interaction at the Eusbett Hotel in Sunyani, Mahama said it is time for President Akufo-Addo to show more commitment to handling the situation.

“It seems that the government does not take this issue seriously. The president himself does not take it seriously. No elderly person has been to the area since this happened. The Minister of National Security, instead of going to the area, was in Kumasi with the President, commissioning a composting plant. What’s your business in commissioning when people are seriously trying to divide the country? ”

Referring to how the government has handled the problem so far, Mahama said: “They never explained to us why they decided to suspend the case. This came after reports that people in military uniforms were seen training and arrested. They were taken to Accra, questioned and brought before a court. Suddenly, the government decides not to process them, it releases them back into the system and today, as they age, the president says that we are aware and that we should not panic. You don’t want the country to panic. It’s not about panicking, it’s about taking the issue seriously. It is as if the government and the security agencies have a very indifferent attitude towards this issue, ”he added.

We will deal with secessionist groups – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday, October 1, 2020, commented publicly on the matter since reports of violent actions by groups in the Volta Region began this year.

He said the government will deal adequately with secessionist groups claiming an independent state within the country.

He said he is confident in the ability of the country’s security and intelligence agencies to stop such threats and repress the activities of secessionists.

Secessionist groups

On Friday, September 25, 2020, Ghanaians witnessed reports that the group had blocked some main roads. leading to the Volta region.

They set up barricades on the main roads of Juapong-Accra and Sogakope-Accra.

The roadblocks were subsequently cleared when security agencies seized control of the roads and strategic facilities in the region.

The Homeland Study Group Foundation wants the Volta region and sections of the northern part of Ghana to be an autonomous country known as Western Togoland.

The group has made a number of attempts to push for the secession of the Volta region of Ghana into the creation of a western Togo state.

The group even declared western Togo’s independence in November 2019.

34 of them were arrested and brought to court.
