The government has directed all schools to strictly adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols when sophomores return to school to resume the academic year.

Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has assured parents and guardians that safety protocols will be strictly followed to prevent an outbreak of the virus in schools.

He mentioned that school authorities would have to make sure sophomores religiously follow security protocols just as seniors had.

Following a visit to some upper secondary school by JoyNews, the boarding students were seen arriving at school quite early in their face masks.

Security men from Kumasi Technical High School took the temperature of students and visitors before allowing them access to the school.

Buckets of Veronica were spotted at strategic points as students received hand sanitizers and nasal masks for protection.

Other schools, including Opoku Ware and Anglican SHS, were also observed to observe the same security protocols.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Adutwum says the government had learned from his experience earlier this year with JHS and SHS seniors and has instituted measures to ensure the safety of all students.

He said: “I think the interesting thing is that the observance of the protocol in the schools is on the higher side because the authority figures are there, so I think that in the schools, the protocols will be observed better than at home.

“So I’m excited to see that the president has given permission for forms 2 to come to the school and to go. And I think the good news is that when they come, the principals will do what they did even with the seniors when the virus was at its peak. “

At some elementary schools, including Rock of Ages International and Asem Boys JHS, classes were in session.

Students at the JHS and SHS levels were happy to go back to school as they would have a suitable environment to study.

One student said: “I am very happy to go back to school because I can learn. When we were at home, I didn’t have much time to learn. “

Another said, “When we were at home, we used to learn, but there are some subjects like science and social studies that need an explanation from the teachers.”

But some private school owners say the government will have to open the school to all high school students to keep them in business.

“It is very difficult to run the school with just the earnings of the JHS 2 students. I have 8 teachers and other staff to pay with the money that we will earn from them. We expected more than 40 students, but only 28 reported today, as you see, we are observing the protocols very well and we can do the same with all the JHS classes, “he said.
