The Ofori Panin Fie has denied claims that the JB Danquah Memorial Center was funded solely by the Government of Ghana.
Accra FM talk show host Kwabena Bobie Ansah claimed that taxpayer money was used to construct the building to serve as a library, but that it was decorated with images of the president’s late uncle Okyenhene and himself. president while denying children the use of the library.
The presenter also claimed that the president’s hometown is developing ahead of other places in the country.
A statement issued on Monday, October 19, 2020, by the Okyenhene Palace has denied the claim.
“The attention of Ofori Panin Fie has been drawn to a video in circulation in which an ill-informed broadcast journalist named Kwabena Bobie Ansah of Accra FM falsely attributes the funding of the JB Danquah Memorial Center to the sole efforts of the Government of Ghana,” He said.
“The Ofori Panin Fie is concerned about the content of the publication and refutes these claims as false. He considers them an irresponsible and abysmal attempt to misinform the population and raise spirits within the country as the 2020 general elections approach. “
Clarification
Clarifying the controversy surrounding the post, Okyenhene said the project that began in 2006 under the leadership of former President John Agyekum Kuffour to serve the people of and around Kyebi stalled when the late president, Professor John Evans Atta -Mills, took over the reins in 2009.
“To clarify and respond to the issues raised in the publication of concern, Ofori Panin Fie informs the public that in 2006, the former president, HE John Agyekum Kuffour, in the interest of national development, began construction of the facility in Kyebi to serve to the people of the constituency as well as to the neighboring areas of the constituency.
“The project was abandoned by the Mills / Mahama management and then completed in 2018 thanks to the promotion of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council and the sponsorship of Huawei Ghana, a Chinese telecommunications company.”
According to him, “the facility was named the JB Danquah Memorial Center in commemoration of his outstanding contributions to the birth and development of our nation. It houses an ultramodern ICT Laboratory donated by the Yamoransa Foundation for the teaching and learning of ICT with special emphasis on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), a Maker Space also donated by the Yamoransa Foundation for the teaching of robotics engineering as well as the construction and development of applications based on virtual reality, games and 3D printing applications, a GIFEC Zonal office which is a 30-seat ICT laboratory for the teaching, learning and application of ICT.
He added that “the facility also houses a library, an EC office and a radio station. The entire facility is managed under the auspices of the Ghana Library Authority, the EC and Okyenhene. As such, Ofori Panin Fie and Nananom from Akyem Abuakwa would like to emphatically state that: The JB Danquah Center was not funded by Ghanaian taxpayer money. However, it was sponsored by Huawei Ghana and the Yamoransa Foundation, ”he added.
He further stated that “The JB Danquah Center is not family owned by Ofori Panin Fie, it is owned by the Ghana Library Authority and is intended for public use by members within and outside the community. We wish to admonish all journalists to remain decorous and professional in their reporting and to desist from publishing misleading information to ensure the continued dignity of the media space.
