President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, through Executive Instrument (IE), declared Monday, December 7, 2020 as a public holiday.
A statement signed by Eugene Arhin, Communications Director of the Presidency, indicates that the decision was made following a proposal from the President of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.
The president said the holiday is to help “facilitate the conduct of elections in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, help ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 security protocols on Election Day, and allow registered voters to exercise their right to vote safely and with a minimum of hassle. “
Consequently, Friday, December 4, which was to be Farmer’s Day, was eliminated and will no longer be celebrated.
“By virtue of Article 3 of the 2001 Law on Holidays and Commemorations (Law 601), the president has the power to declare any other day as a public holiday, instead of a specified day as an official holiday.”
“Thus, having celebrated Farmer’s Day on Friday, November 6, 2020, the President is satisfied that it will not be appropriate for Friday, December 4, 2020, which is a legal holiday, to be observed as a public holiday. As such, Friday, December 4, 2020 will not be considered a holiday. “
