The GFA communication team; The bridge between the GFA and the public

Good communication in all aspects of human life is the basis of understanding between two or more parties and an essential element for progress.

The importance of communication in sport cannot be underestimated if the synergy between the actors of the sports fraternity advances.

The Communication Department of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is to be commended for its excellent and creative spirit in spreading the right information to the football fraternity in Ghana.

Headed by Henry Asante Twum, the GFA communication department has distinguished itself in a number of ways and presented good initiatives that are helping Ghana soccer.

On Friday, September 25, 2020, Black Stars head coach Charles Akonnor named 23 players for the international friendly matches to be played in Turkey. The games were against Mali on October 9 and Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea, however, has been withdrawn from the game due to travel restrictions.

The call for the friendly was ‘weird’ this time compared to the normal way Ghanaians have witnessed over the years. Over the years, whenever a Black Stars head coach wants to announce players for a game or tournament, the GFA organizes a hotel press conference for the ceremony to take place.

This time, the squad was unveiled to the public through GFA News on Facebook; an initiative of the communication team to disseminate information to the public.

Organized by GFA spokesperson Henry Asante Twum, the GFA News initiative has financially saved GFA. This is because organizing a press conference comes at a great cost. The cost implies securing a place for the press conference, branding and decoration of the place, a call for the media that at the end of the day may also incur the cost and the presence of the sympathizers union in these ceremonies that sometimes also incurs cost.

A typical example of the points listed above occurred on March 3, 2020 when coach CK Akonnor named his first team prior to an AFCON qualifying match against Sudan. The GFA organized a press conference at the Accra City Hotel with the attendance of sports journalists and fan unions.

We can all attest to the fact that organizing a press conference with the attendance of relevant people came at a cost. Therefore, the idea of advertising the team through the GFA News initiative has saved the FA a lot of money.

Another point that many might overlook is the fun some Ghanaians made with the first call-up for coach CK Akonnor in March. The former Black Stars captain had a hard time mentioning the names of some players and their teams.

GFA News has taken care of this.
GFA prerecorded news has helped the Ghana soccer fraternity to become aware of GFA activities. This has created a good link between the FA, the media and the public.

One notable thing about the GFA communication team is their presence on social media. The team provides timely information on the activities and decisions made by the FA through its various social networks. Most of the time, this is done through edited videos, posters or brochures and images.

For example, after CK Akonnor announced their team for friendly games, the team posted flyers on their various social media platforms that quoted the coach’s exact words regarding calls.

It is high time that we all started to appreciate the good work of the GFA, especially the communication team. It has served as a good bridge between the FA and the public.
