The general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP), John Boadu, says that the conduct of former special counsel Martin Amidu before and after his resignation has made the party a bitter lesson not to name a stranger in government.
Amidu announced his resignation on Monday citing many reasons, including interference with his work by President Akufo Addo.
The former special prosecutor, in a post-resignation radio interview, called on Ghanaians to hold President Akufo-Addo responsible if he suffers any harm.
He also alleged that he has been receiving death threats and has reported the problem to the Minister of National Security.
“I tried to call Kan Dapaah, he didn’t choose him and I got a former national security adviser to contact him and tell him that, and I know the people involved, I can name them, but I’m saving it in the meantime. I lay down my life for the Republic of Ghana and the President will be responsible for everything that happens to me.
“The intelligence is there and I called the minister of national security but he did not choose and I got a former national security adviser to speak with him and this fact is already known and I say that the president will be responsible for everything that happens for me,” said the Thursday at Citi Fm, based in Accra.
He added: “I am Ghanaian and I am not afraid of anything and, as I said, dying in the cause of the fight against corruption is what I started with President Jerry Rawlings on December 31, 1982 and I am not leaving because some people they think they can threaten me. I don’t give a damn about that.
“… If you don’t stop, I’ll answer. As for what I will do, I reserve it for myself, but as I said, whatever happens, I lay down my life for the Republic of Ghana and the President has a constitutional duty to protect me. I don’t need security in my house or to be followed. And whoever tries, will blame himself.
But commenting on issues related to Mr. Amidu’s resignation on the Peace FM morning show monitored by Kasapafmonline.com, John Boadu stated that Amidu’s conduct vindicates the party’s position, as party members were strongly against that the president appointed him.
“To tell the truth, internally, the party members were not happy with this appointment, but the president wanted to show the people of Ghana that we can go beyond partisanship. What hurts me about this issue is that Mr. Amidu has nailed it with the argument that if someone is not a member of his party and is competent, he can appoint him in his government so that the country can develop.
Mr. Boadu added: “Do you think that with what Mr. Amidu has done, a government will have the confidence to appoint an outsider? Because when the president calls to have a discussion with the person designated by the outside, everything that they discussed is published in the public space. If Amidu was a true supporter and knew how hard we have worked to have power, would he have done what he has done? That’s what hurts me the most. We wanted to create a situation where, as long as you are competent no matter where you belong, the nation must make use of your asset. “
