The European Union (EU) has provided logistical support for Ghana’s social protection, employment and business development services, under the EU-funded Ghana Employment and Social Protection Program (GESP).
The support, estimated at EUR 1.9 million, with items, including 15 vehicles, 98 motorcycles, information technology equipment and office furniture, seeks to provide resources to the institutions of the GESP program to improve the provision of services at the national level. national, regional and community.
The GESP program is a partnership agreement between the EU and the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance, Employment and Labor Relations, and Gender and Social Protection, as well as the Ghana Industry Association, the Institute of Local Government Services and the School of Social Work.
Mr Zoltan Agai, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Ghana, said that the program aims to contribute to inclusive and equitable growth in Ghana by strengthening social protection and employment systems in the country.
He said that it had contributed to enhancing technical and vocational training and education opportunities for the informal sector and in the agricultural value chain.
“Our support is based on ensuring effective service delivery. In view of this, we have ensured that the items are also delivered at decentralized levels; District Assemblies, Labor Departments and Public Employment Centers selected beneficiaries, ”he said.
Ms Yvonne Quansah, Director of the Economic Relations and Resource Mobilization Division of the Ministry of Finance, said that they were delighted to partner the EU in the GESP program, adding that the support sought to increase the government’s efforts to promote the job creation and social protection.
He said the government had improved existing social protection interventions and introduced new ones, saying they were committed to ensuring social protection for the poor and vulnerable.
“It is along these lines that the government considers the GESP program to be timely and relevant, since it complements its effort to close the poverty gap in the country. On behalf of the government of Ghana, I wish to congratulate the EU once again for working together to combat poverty in the country, ”he said.
The Ghana Employment and Social Protection program is a partnership initiative launched in 2018 by the EU and the Government of Ghana to improve social protection systems, improve the management of employment policies, strengthen training opportunities for the sector informal and improve access to business development services.
