Leroy Sane remains a transfer target for Bayern Munich, despite Manchester City’s desire to keep the young winger in Etihad.
A contract offer remains on the table for the German, which shows how high manager Pep Guardiola rates him.
City have undoubtedly missed Sane’s direct injury from the left flank this season.
And it appears to be a situation they will have to get used to, as transfer speculation continues to link the youngster to a move towards the German champions in the next transfer window.
It was Guardiola who first brought Sane to town, and now he needs to dig up a new wonderkid to play on the left side of his attack.
Here are some possible options, ranging from established stars to 17-year-olds who haven’t made the breakthrough yet …
Achraf Hakimi
Borussia Dortmund’s exploration network is among the best in the world, but perhaps these days it’s too effective for its own good.
They found another gem in Hakimi, although it will only be temporarily in Germany, as it is currently on loan from Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants may think twice before letting Hakimi go temporarily again, with the 21-year-old Moroccan packing 10 assists in 25 Bundesliga games this season. He also has four goals in eight Champions League outings.
As good a dribbler as a cruiser, Hakimi’s straightforward style of soccer means it could even be an improvement on Sane.
Paulinho
Bayer Leverkusen’s lively teenager usually plays as a central attacking midfielder, but his pace, directness, and excellent runs after playing a brace make him perfect to replace Sane’s move on the left.
Paulinho has only started a league game since he moved to the Bundesliga two years ago, but he has appeared 21 times from the bench, using his speed to revitalize his team against tired legs.
He has an excellent long-range shot, but it’s the ability to use creative teammates as a wall during direct flank runs that really sets him apart. Over time, Paulinho should become one of the best wingers in Europe.
Diego Lainez
The 19-year-old arrived at the Club América academy, making his competitive debut in March 2017, becoming the third youngest in the club’s history to do so.
Lainez proved enough despite his tender age, five goals in 50 appearances, to move to Spanish Real Betis in January 2019. He signed a five-year deal that was allegedly worth € 14 million.
Having represented Mexico from the U17 level to the senior configuration, Lainez plays predominantly from the left side, but considers his versatility a key force, along with his dribbling and ability to beat a man.
Lainez began running regularly on the Betis side before the injury cut his season.
Talles Magno
Without a doubt, the crudest player on this list, and a lot for the future.
According to all reports, Talles Magno is the next skilled Brazilian to follow in Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo’s footsteps with a big money move.
He is a tall and silky player who writhes and throws himself on the touchline with a classic Brazilian touch. Those kinds of things don’t always go well with Guardiola, but at such a tender age, the City manager could sculpt the teenager into the new Sane.
The 17-year-old has started 12 senior games for Vasco in Brazil this season, suggesting he is able to compete with much older and more experienced players.
